Description of Garden
Designers: Wol & Sue Staines. Glen Chantry has been developed since 1976 by the present owners. Most of the gently sloping, three acre garden is laid out with large informally shaped, colour themed mixed borders which contain a very wide selection of perennials, shrubs roses and woody plants, underplanted with bulbs for early and late season interest. Two ponds connected by a winding stream bed provide habitats for a wide range of moisture loving and woodland plants. Nearer the house, three substantial limestone rock gardens house a fascinating collection of alpine plants. The intimate White Garden with its central fountain and cruciform paths is luxuriantly planted in combinations of white, silver and greens and enclosed by rose festooned trellis. A formally shaped vegetable garden [not open but visible] with central box parterre and surrounding borders of hot colours and grasses marked the millennium. At Glen Chantry plants dominate, and the owners' philosophy has been to display their varied foliage, shapes, textures and colours in as artistic a fashion as their skills allow. Many of the plants in the garden are available from the attached specialized perennial nursery .
